Chapter Six

Zev breathed sigh of relief when Cas’s eyelids began to flutter. The part of the mating ritual he had been most afraid of was over. When someone like Cas went through the ceremony, most times there was a physical change. Cas was still the same, still delicate and beautiful.

“He wakes,” Zus said in the softest voice Zev had ever heard his brother use. Zus was a warrior’s warrior. He was one of the biggest of their tribe. He didn’t do soft.

“How do you feel, kisa?” Zev asked as he helped Cas sit up. The man’s face was a little pale but he still looked beautiful to Zev.

“I’m okay.” Cas rubbed the side of his head as if it ached.

“Does your head hurt?”

“No, not exactly. I just…” Cas shrugged. “I feel like I just got blasted by a solar flare.”

Zev glanced at his brothers. Solar flare?

“I am sorry for the interruption,” Elder Duross said, “but we must complete the ritual.”

“Complete the ritual?” Cas seemed confused as he glanced own at his wrist where he had cut himself. The cut seemed to be healing rather fast. It looked days old already. “I thought we already did that.”

Elder Duross smiled as if talking to a child. “We must record your mating tattoos.”

“Tattoo?” Zev chuckled when Cas’s eyebrows shot up. “We’re getting tattoos?”

“In a manner of speaking, kisa,” Zev said. “When we go through the mating ritual, our tribal tattoo appears. We’re born with them, but they don’t appear until we go through this part of the mating ritual. As our mate, you receive your tattoo during the ceremony that joins us together.”

Zus’s fingers grazed the back of Cas’s neck. “It’s right here, on the back of your neck.”

“Zus,” Zan whispered a moment later, “I’ve never seen a tattoo like this before. This isn’t the tattoo of our tribe.”

“What?” Cas grunted when he was bent over.

“Oh, my goddess,” the elder whispered.

Zev stared down at the tattoo on the back of Cas’s neck in wonder. He had never seen anything like it. It was a tattoo of a triangle with a circle at each end. In the middle of the triangle was a planet with three moons hovering over it.

“What’s it?” Cas tried to feel the back of his neck. Zev reached down and grabbed his wrists, holding them together. “Did the ritual go wrong?”

“In all my years, I have never seen something like this,” Elder Duross said. “The Goddess Tellus has truly blessed your matelotage.”

“She gave them to me?” Cas asked. “She never said anything about having tattoos.”

“You have spoken to the goddess?” the elder asked.

Zev hissed when he felt a burning pain in his wrist. He caught just a glimpse of the tattoo on Zus’s wrist when he shook them. “You have the same tattoo as Cas.”

Zus stared down at the new tattoo on his wrist before raising his head to look at Cas. “It would seem Tellus truly means for the world to know we have her blessing.”

“Is that a good thing?”

Zev grinned as he scooped Cas up in his arms and swung him around.
